Frugal & Fun Family Activities for the Holidays

Frugal & Fun Family Activities for the Holidays 1

The holidays are here and that means cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents are gathering for lots of together time. Here are a few fun and frugal activities to create new traditions this season.

  • Volunteer as a family. Serving meals, visiting a senior center, fostering a pet, or organizing a coat drive are a few simple ways to give back during this time of year. Find meaningful opportunities to make an impact in your community at VolunteerMatch.org.
  • Host a holiday bake-off. Create a little friendly competition with judges and low-cost prizes. Browse these Decadent Holiday Desserts for a few ideas.
  • Cook together. Plan and prepare Christmas dinner, a latke party, or New Years Eve bash. Get menu inspiration on our recipe page.
  • Light Displays. Take a drive and enjoy the festive sights at local light displays for lots of “Oohs” and “Ahhs”.
  • Stroll and browse local artist markets and craft fairs and bring home a keepsake.
  • Decorate cookies. Whip up a batch of sugar cookies and set out plenty of icing, sprinkles and candies. Package the finished products and gift them to neighbors, coworkers and friends. Remember to save some for Santa!
  • Schedule a family game night. Classic card and board games are sure to bring some good, old-fashioned fun.
  • Throw a pajama party. Get comfy, camp out in the family room and binge-watch holiday favorites. Don’t forget the popcorn!
  • Create festive décor. D.I.Y. a wreath, centerpiece, or ornaments using crafting supplies that you have around the house. Get the little ones in on the fun with these cute kids holiday crafts.
  • Get outdoors. All of this family time can make anyone stir crazy so bundle up and get some fresh air. Go sledding, build a snowman or just take a hike. Reward yourself with a cup of hot cocoa when you arrive home.
  • Attend a holiday concert. Check local schools, places of worship and community centers for a schedule of festive events.
  • Visit the library. Check out seasonal stories to read with the kids each night until Santa arrives.
