Smoothies vs. Juicing: Which is Better for You?

Smoothies vs. Juicing: Which is Better for You? 1

Drinking smoothies and making juice are nutritious and delicious ways to get your daily servings of fruit and vegetables. However, is one method healthier than the other?

Let us compare the two.

Smoothies

Making smoothies involves mixing ingredients in a blender. This is an excellent way to get a lot of variety of fruits and veggies into your diet. You can mix vegetables such as spinach, kale, carrots, and beets with apples, pineapples, and berries to create a fantastic beverage bursting with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Using milk or non-fat Greek yogurt also adds to this nutritious mixture.

Since you are using whole pieces of fruit or vegetable in the smoothie, you are also getting all of the insoluble fiber, or pulp, which is ideal for you. It also makes you feel fuller longer as compared to juice since you are also eating the bulk of the fruit or vegetable. Smoothies also give you a more sustained release of nutrients as it takes longer to digest the fiber.

Juicing

This method requires a dedicated juicing machine that extracts the juice (both the water and nutrients in the fruit) while removing most of the insoluble fiber. While insoluble fiber is good for you, as stated above, this method does allow you to absorb 100% of the nutrients quickly and easily because the pulp does not slow down absorption. Also, juice does include soluble fiber, which is different from insoluble fiber.

Best of Both Worlds

As with most things, and especially one’s diet, maintaining a healthy balance is best. So rather than picking between smoothies or juicing, try alternating between the two for the best results.
